Cartilage surgery for injuries and wear and tear (osteoarthritis)

Chondroplasty is the smoothing of the cartilage layer in the case of cartilage flaking.

Abrasion arthroplasty is also performed arthroscopically. In the case of locally advanced osteoarthritis, an already exposed surface is milled in order to achieve a new scarred coating of the joint surface through the resulting bleeding. This is usually combined with a pilot drill. This involves drilling into the bone, which also mobilizes the body's own stem cells from the bone. This ensures that not only a scarred coating but also cartilage cells can grow into the new coating.

OATS plastic surgery is the ideal treatment method for smaller, deep cartilage defects of up to 4 cm². Bone cartilage cylinders are removed arthroscopically and inserted into the defect site as a replacement. We always perform this technique arthroscopically, sometimes with several cylinders.
