Both the inner meniscus and the outer meniscus act as cartilaginous shock absorbers in the joint.
The meniscus can tear due to degeneration, trauma or a combination of both.
Usually sudden stabbing pain in the knee joint, especially when turning and squatting. Sometimes also blockage in the joint.
Particularly in younger people without significant degenerative changes or osteoarthritis in the joint, the treatment of choice is arthroscopic partial meniscus removal, meniscus smoothing or meniscus suturing , depending on the type of meniscus tear. If the meniscus damage is combined with advanced osteoarthritis of the knee joint (gonarthrosis), the indication for arthroscopy must be weighed up individually.
