Neck pain often occurs in isolation, similar to the lumbar spine. The tension can radiate into the back of the head or even the shoulder area. If the nerve structures in the area of the spinal cord or the nerve exit channels are pinched or compressed, radiating pain in the arms, hands and fingers ("brachialgia") is often reported. Sometimes the patient complains of numbness and tingling sensations, in the worst cases also of paralysis and unsteady gait. Headaches and dizzy spells also occur in connection with cervical spine disorders.
Monotonous, unphysiological postures such as working at a computer screen or on the telephone, as well as one-sided physical work, e.g. on an assembly line, lead to muscular imbalances, increased muscle tone and painful muscle hardening, which can affect any area of the spine.
