Omarthrosis/acromioclavicular joint arthrosis

Omarthrosis or shoulder joint arthrosis is the wear and tear of the cartilage lining of the shoulder joint.

Symptoms

Usually slowly increasing painful restriction of movement of the shoulder joint in all directions of movement.

Causes

Omarthrosis is often caused by high, non-physiological loads on the shoulder joint. However, some people are prone to osteoarthritis of all large joints even without overloading. In this case, we speak of genetically determined polyarthrosis.

Therapy

Mild cases are usually treated conservatively. Conservative treatment consists of physiotherapy to treat the tension chains, hyaluronic acid injections to improve the synovial fluid in the joint, PRP treatment to reduce inflammation and joint regeneration. Disruptive free joint bodies or bone protrusions can be removed arthroscopically(osteophyte removal). However, if there is very advanced osteoarthritis of the shoulder joint (omarthrosis), implantation of a shoulder prosthesis is indicated. If there is only a cartilage defect at the humeral head, a cementless cap prosthesis is usually implanted. If there are additional defects in the glenoid region, both parts of the joint are replaced. In the case of additional, non-reconstructable defects of the rotator cuff (defect arthropathy), an inverse shoulder prosthesis is used, as this is the only way to restore the function of the shoulder joint.
