Ankle joint arthrosis

Despite the exposed and injury-prone position of the ankle joint, arthrosis is less common in the ankle joint than in the knee or hip joint.

Symptoms

Causes

In most cases, ankle arthrosis is the result of fractures, rarely also of osteochondrosis dissecans or a rheumatic disease. Genetic predispositions play a subordinate role in the ankle joint.

Therapy

In most cases, conservative treatment is carried out with cortisone injections, PRP injections or hyaluronic acid injections to improve the synovial fluid. In addition, tape bandages, ankle orthoses, insoles, physiotherapy, microcurrent therapy (Luxxamed). Arthroscopic removal of osteophytes is the treatment of choice in cases of impingement and restricted mobility due to osteophytes (bony protrusion on the tibia). In the case of advanced arthrosis, axial corrections, implantation of an ankle prosthesis or stiffening of the upper ankle joint(arthrodesis of the upper ankle joint) can be considered.
