Ankle fracture

Symptoms

We differentiate between fibula fractures, which are divided into Weber A, Weber B and Weber C fractures depending on the level of injury. Weber A fractures correspond to a bony ligament avulsion, Weber B fractures, i.e. fractures at the level of the ligament connection between the tibia and fibula (syndesmosis) and Weber C fractures above the syndesmosis. Fractures of the medial malleolus and lateral malleolus are referred to as bimalleolar fractures.

Causes

Sprains caused by jumping from a great height (pilon tibial fracture) or twisting trauma (medial malleolus fracture, Weber fracture, bimalleolar fracture).

Therapy

Weber A fractures can sometimes be treated conservatively. Weber B fractures, Weber C fractures and bimalleolar fractures are generally operated on today. Injuries to the syndesmosis are regularly stabilized.
